I was probably very excited to see this 03 shunter - we didn't get anything like it where I live, and I've always been a small loco fan. Hence, the 126 instamatic was pointed through a fence to capture this scene. The ex-steam tender converted to a snowplough won't have registered, but is interesting today.
I have a feeling that this is somewhere around York in the 1980s, but can't really be sure, so don't quote me on it.
Looks like a second just out of shot left?
ReplyDeleteCan’t help with location.
Once again you had me intrigued, so I did a quick search on Google Maps and NLS maps - https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/spy/#zoom=17&lat=53.96389&lon=-1.09992&layers=168&b=1&r=35. Could it be what appears to have once been a depot (now a housing estate) by St. Barnabas' Church? The church and house almost fit (I searched for "churches in York" until I found one near the railway that looked similar), although I can't see the extra gabled wing on the church in your photo? The depot location seems to match, though.
ReplyDeleteBlimey, proper detective work! I wish I could confirm this as I strongly suspect the yard has long since vanished.
ReplyDeleteI think I've got it about right location-wise - wherever the location is exactly, I can say with 100% confidence that it's York TMD. See here for a few similar(ish) photos:

Brilliant! The church in the background is the giveaway - well done and thanks very much!
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome!
ReplyDeleteI almost gave up when I realised that most of the depots and such would've probably disappeared under a sea of housing, but then I realised that it's rarer for churches to be demolished, and happily it wasn't long before I found it given the area as being 'probably York'. The hard part was working out what on earth the depot was, until I did a general search for York depots and stumbled across a photo of the TMD (which would make sense given the date).
To be fair I haven't looked at any railway maps which might help confirm or otherwise that York TMD was near St. Barnabas' church. I'll let you fill in the missing gap as to whether that's true or not!
