Yellow

I know that PS Models show their loco in industrial grey, but I've decided I want to paint mine yellow. That's an industrial colour too, and a bit different from anything else in my fleet.

The MDF parts were treated to a couple of coats of sealer, sanding between them. Then nice thick coat of white primer - yellow is a pain if you don't undercoat with white.

Finally, a coat of Fiat Broom Yellow, from my new favourite spray can supplier, The Range. The paint is good, I just wish they would put a price on the stand (it's £4.99) as I'm sure that would encourage sales.

The sharp-eyed will notice that I haven't put the rivets on yet. That's because I fancy wasp strips on the ends, and reckon it will be easier to paint them on a flat surface. We'll see how that pans out, I may go back to pure yellow!

  1. If Toby (my 8 year old son) and I can manage wasp stripes on one of these kits (admittedly the slight different battery loco) then I'm fairly confident you will be able to pull it off without trouble. We found that one of the rolls of tamiya mnasking tape I had was the perfect width (off the top of my head I think it was probably 6mm) so no complex tape cutting. The only tricky part was finding the dead centre of the model to line up the tape. To make it nice and simple we actually masked the whole front in strips of tape (each one lined up against the previous etc.) and then peeled off the ones we wanted to paint black. I'm sure you don't need any advice or help wit this though (something about teaching Grandma to suck eggs!).

  2. In fact, it turns out I did a whole video on how I did the stripes and how I found the middle.

    Hi Phil

Are you using the Hicote paint from The Range or something else?

    1. Yes. It's the easiest available spray paint, now Halfords has gone a bit rubbish (apparently)

  4. Years ago (decades?), Hycote used to supply at least some of the paint for Halfords. (The styrene-friendly primers, certainly.) I wish I had a “The Range” outlet near me…

    1. If you don't mind shopping online you can get all the Hycote paints via Amazon. including the primers which I find are really good even as top coats (I use the black primer as both a primer and a top coat depending on what I'm painting).
