If you are tempted by a Chris Nevard style beam engine house for your layout, these photos of a prototype from Elsecar might be useful to you.
Sadly, the chimney has long since gone, but you certainly get the idea. It's actually, quite a small building, I'd always assumed these things were much larger.

Useful photos Phil. Have you been to the East Pool mine in Redruth? You can get right up close and a lot of the other buildings that necessary for mines, but rarely seen on models, are also still there. It's my reference site and very much worth a visit if you're ever in the area.
I might just build this although I have no room for it on my (proposed) new layout.
