Primer catastrophe

Needing some red oxide primer for the bottom of his boat, my dad drops into the local Halfords. They are out of stock.

He asks the staff, who check with the office. Red oxide primer is only available in brushable form.

This seems odd I think, so I Tweet @Halfords_uk for confirmation.

Hi ! Thank you for taking the time to contact ourselves today! I'm afraid we do not sell the red oxide car primer in spray cans anymore. I hope this helps!

Noooooooo!

It looks like I'm going to have to find another supply of sprayable red oxide now.  (grumpy face) Pity as this is really good stuff and perfect for anti-fouling on the bottom of model boats.

My first thought on reading this was to check it isn't 1st of April today. That paint is basic to so many garden railway applications. Will have to find a new source for future use and maybe visit our local Halfords to buy any remaining stock.

Try the Hycote Red Primer, I've used it quite a bit and have been really happy with it. I use their grey and black as well. In fact having used up the last can of humbrol grey primer I had I've now switched to Hycote exclusively for plastic kits as it's a lot more economical.

For metal kits I've been trying an acrylic etch primer from Simoniz, which so far seems very good as well.

Having read your post immediate panic set in and I rushed down to my local halfords in burton on trent. I bought the last three 500ml cans of red primer. At the checkout I asked the lady to check if either the 500ml or the 300ml had been discontinued. She checked on their system and it hasn't. It would show obsolete. Good news is it's not been discontinued! Maybe its low demand at your store Phil so they may no longer stock it?

Interesting. The social media person said it was gone, but now perhaps things aren't so cut and dried? Will investigate further.

Phil, just bought some of the red primer from my local Halfords, asked the assistant about it being discontinued and was told that as far as she knew that wasn't happening and currently the central warehouse has about 1,000 in stock.

Regards John Bruce.

This is all interesting. My local store checked and said it no longer exists. The Halfords social media people say it has been discontinued - but the local store now has 4 cans in stock. Hmmmm.

I'm a bit behind the times and now catching up, but we sell red oxide primer where I work in Lincoln, at Fisher Motor Factors. It's a little way out from the centre, being just off the A46, but feel free to grab some next time you're this way at Digitrains. (We've supplied them with items a few times)
