I've edited magazines for years, but never used anything but Desktop Publishing. The nearest I got to having to do any pasteup, was creating camera-ready artwork for the DOGA Journal back in the 1990s. Even then, the pages were DTP, but pictures had to be printed on the office 600dpi laser, and then stuck onto the page. The whole lot them being posted to the printers to photograph and turn into pages.
The full process is fascinating to watch, and I'm really glad I don't need to do it!
