Warehouse Wednesday: Workshop doors

Workshop doors

There's not much to say about this week's photo.

I spotted these fantastic 50s looking workshop doors in Loughborough. Perfect for a steam era onwards layout, they are the sort of simple, basic design, that you never quite think of when building a model.

See more on Google Streetview, including the nifty half Citroen's in the wall!

That Google Streetview picture reminds me of somewhere that used to be Southampton, near the railway station - probably a car body repair shop or similar.

Unfortunately, this was about 30 years back, so details are a bit hazy.

Whatever it was, they had the back end of a 70s / 80s Mini, "parked" a couple of metres up a wall, complete with suitably "subtle" number plate (you've guessed it - OSH 1 T ).

I was on my way to a job interview - so I didn't have a camera with me. It was another 15 years before I returned to Southampton - and I didn't come across this "landmark" then - so I can only assume it might have got swept away as part of some redevelopment.

Obviously, I could be mistaken ….

Upon further checking, it turned out to have been used as a logo by a garage in Bevois Valley - the company concerned (E&J Jarvis) actually having removed it very recently, with plans for a replacement, according to a social media feed.

However, this explains why I didn't come across this landmark a number of years later - I was looking in the wrong place! More to the point, when I went to that job interview, it was a dry summer day - and I was in my early 20s - so I would have thought nothing about walking.

Since I'd never visited the city before, it's hardly surprising that I didn't know which area was which. I would have just memorised directions from a map the day before. For me, getting to know specific roads would normally have required a second visit.
