I only know Birmingham Snow Hill station from it's rebirth in the late 1980s. I walked through the tunnel and marvelled at the new look, clean lines.
What I didn't understand, is the older version. How did such a massive station all but disappear? This video shows (in silence) the glory days. Oh for a time machine!

Thank you Phil. Snow Hill, even when used as a car park, was one of my missed opportunities. In the mid-1970s there were occasional family shopping trips to Brum, and I would usually be able to arrange some “spotting” time at New Street (hoping to see a “Western”). I knew a little about Snow Hill from local TV news reports, but alas never attempted to visit it in the twilight of its existence. My loss.
I think I read more recently that there were serious structural problems with the old Snow Hill station at the time of its closure. (Possibly due to wartime bombing, but I am not sure about that.)
