Which makes us extra lucky in choosing that day for the Knightcote Model Boat Club Sunday lunch. This isn't a grand affair in a restaurant but a chance for members to get together and enjoy a few competitions. During the day a light lunch is served. This year it was a delicious lasagna with salad and baked spud followed by crumble and custard.
We had several events:
Slingshot racing - this went well with at least half a dozen competitors finishing off the season. I'm out of this with a broken boat that needs a rebuild over the winter.
Tomkat Racing - again the final rounds of this. 7 entrants this time with some tight racing and a beauty contest for the boats.
Plank racing - look this up on the website to understand the rules. Suffice to say we had 4 planks on the water and at least one reliably made it to the target on the other side.
Fido Trophy - This was new. Put simply 5 boats would be on the water with boat rescue devices attached. Then 100 coloured balls were thrown in and the winner was the person who collected the most in 5 minutes. I tried my luck with the Puffer in their first round and managed 23 - well ahead of anyone else in the heat. It turned out that the strategy was to have a slow, heavy and controllable boat. Go too fast and all the balls came out of the rescue device, something that frustrated several of the youngsters using Tomkats !
Yacht racing - Sailors circumnavigated the pond in whatever wind there was. Sadly this was light to non-existent. 3 boats did managed 3 laps before the time was up but this was the one group who would have preferred worse weather.
As it was, everyone had a good time. While there will be sailing all through the winter, regular meetings will be held indoors until the spring 'cos it will be too dark in the evenings !
