A foggy day in Kidderminster

Foggy DMU

Not every day photographing trains needs to involve bright sunshine. My traditional end-of-year train trip to watch trains and buy books at the Severn Valley Railway took place in fairly thick mist. But it didn't matter, in fact I think it added to the atmosphere.

Arriving at Kidderminster, there was a DMU rattling away in the platform. Instantly, I was transported back to cold days catching one of these for a ride into Birmingham. OK, I don't remember them in green, but I certainly travelled a few miles in these utlitarian trains. The first time I saw a Sprinter, it was like something from the future, compared to the units we were forced to use. Of course now, these are exciting and "vintage" and enthusiasts want to travel on them.

Foggy 40

On the other side of the platform was a class 40 whistling away. It seems odd to think that many years ago, this was a common sound.

Foggy 4MT

Of course there was steam, in the form of 4MT 75069, hauling a nicely full train. It seems that the weather didn't put travellers off, and I can see the appeal of snuggling down in a steam heated compartment. Even if you didn't, a bit of mist is hardly a reason to bin those pre-booked tickets!
