Saturday Film Club: HS2 megastructures

On my recent trip to Brum, I wondered what that massive bridge on the skyline was, and this video explains!

Now, I think HS2 is a very good idea. Maybe the implementation is a bit rubbish in many places, but as I know people whose job it is to get trains up the WCML, and there are precious few slots to do it. Even if you hate the idea though, can you not at least be proud we can manage engineering like this?

I remember reading an interview with from Arnold Schwarzenegger taking about films that were expensive to make. I think he was walking about the car chase scene in The Matrix that cost over $150 million to film. His point is thta it isn't how much it cost but can you "see" what the money was spent on. In The Matrix that is definitely true, and I think the same will probably be true of HS2.

Whether we actually needed to build such monumental infrastructure is a different question…

Just ask the people tasked with getting trains up WCML if we need HS2. However, have we done the typical British thing of gold-plating everything, and making a hash of running the project - I suspect so.
