Wasp stripes - done.
Last week's advice about using masking tape passed me by, because by the time I'd read it, this was all done. Having said that, I wanted to try this method anyway, and it seems to work.
There's nothing sophisticated here - I made a guide 10mm wide, marked the centre of the buffer beam, and used a 45 degree square to draw the first lines. The guide allowed me to do the rest.
Then, using a bow pen, I marked the edges to get a nice, straight line. After that, I filled in the middles with a paintbrush.
Buffers and rivets were added to finish things off. Spraying those black rivets yellow was a paint. You need a lot of paint to cover the base colour, and to be honest, I've not really achieved perfection. This loco is going to be weathered though, so hopefully this will cover it up.

Looks good. I'd never have thought to brush paint the stripes; possibly as I'm used to working in smaller scales where it would be much more difficult to mark up like that. Might give this a try next time though, especially if I need stripes that aren't the same width as the tape I have to hand.
The trick is to draw the edges with a bow pen so they are nice and sharp (ish - I'm not that good with one) and fill in the middle with the brush. As you say, it works well for odd width stripes. Anyway, I couldn't be bothered to fire up the airbrush.
Will remember that, thanks! I can almost never be bothered with the airbrush (especially in the larger scales). I just used a can of the Hycote black primer to paint them in; the work of a few seconds and all done.
Oh, and I had the same problem painting black parts yellow. Total nightmare of a colour combination.
