Man the lifeboats !

Little BoatsBefore any assembly can happen on the Canberra, it needs to be painted. The days when I waved the brush over a model after construction are long gone. I've looked closely at the instructions and know that there are plenty of parts that will be all but inaccessible, while remaining clearly visible, on this ship.

First colour was white. I know the plastic is white but it's the wrong white. Satin white looks a lot better as well as being easier to touch up if required !

Basically, everything got two coats from the airbrush. Then I could move on.

According to Airfix, the lifeboats are brown inside. The same brown as the decks it seems. Painting them seemed to take forever as I was being careful - touch up is one thing but the less I have to of this the better.

But, I have a question. Were the boats stowed uncovered ? Surely, even when tucked under the decks as they are, rain and seawater would get in. I've had a good look at the photos I can find and can't answer this. Maybe in 1:600 scale it doesn't matter, but I'd like to know anyway. At least until it's too late to do anything then please don't tell me !

Phil,

Looking on Google images it would sem that the lifeboats were stowed uncovered. For an example look at this picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/adambangor/5368035885/.

What a fantastic picture !

As you say, they do look uncovered. Still seems odd though but I guess if they had "dressed" the ship for the official photo then someone would have covered up the rust at the front, so I suppose it must be correct.

As an ex MN Radio Officer, I think there is a good chance that the lifeboats would have been uncovered. One or possibly two on the Canberra might have had some sort of shelter and an engine. I saw Russian ships in the 60's with enclosed lifeboats and I thought it was much better idea!.

A Google search on "Canberra's Port Side Lifeboat" will find a P&O Heritage site photo of an (uncovered) lifeboat in-situ

Not exactly answering your question, but several of her ex-lifeboats are still around, notably the two in service with Bristol Ferry Boat Co.
