Ask and ye shall recieve

For the last couple of weeks, I've noticed that a builder living up my road has had a pile of old lead flashing half under a pile of wood in his front garden.

A few days ago, on the way tot he pub, I spotted him sorting out his van and cheekily asked if it was scrap.

Yes it was, and I could take it away. Which I did on the way back.

Result: I reckon about 15kg of lead suitable for weighting model railways and boats. OK, I had to flatten it and clean the muck off with a hose, but it's a small price to pay for a few years supply.

What a scoop, I've been looking at various ways of adding weight to models myself, including considering care wheel weights, but since they switched to lead free that many years ago, you need a bigger surface area to make up the same weight

Nick - I've never been that enamoured with car wheel weights. They work but are awafully expensive if you don't have a handy local wheel changing place who will collect them for you can pass them on.

Lead flashing is easy to bend and cut so it can be fitted into odd spaces. If you can't get it free, a builders merchant will sell you a roll at a very reasonable price. Half an O gauge wagon kits will buy many, many years supply and new, it's clean too!
